Following incidents of violent behaviour after England’s last World Cup game a Hornchurch pub is calling on their customers to reflect the players’ efforts on the pitch by enjoying themselves responsibly.

Fans across the country are preparing for the first England World Cup semi-final in 28 years and staff at The Fatling want their customers to enjoy this momentous event safely.

Sandy Castle, general manager at the pub told the Recorder: “We decided to publish the letter to reach out to our customers, to remind them how much we enjoy hosting events like this and providing a safe environment for everyone.

“As a venue we can only take responsibility for so much, and thought a reminder to our customers that they should always enjoy themselves responsibly is important.”

Fatling’s open letter made reference to incidents where high streets were blocked, Swedish flags were burned and bottles were thrown harming adults and children on Saturday, July 7.

“We have done everything we can to help deal with the behaviour of others and keep our guests safe,” wrote Fatling staff in the letter.

“But we can only go so far. If people want to behave appallingly we cannot stop them. We cannot do anything to stop this from happening other than hope that they have read this letter and think twice before acting.”

The Fatling also pointed out that some people who are not interested in the football may just want to get to work and carry on with their daily business.

“If they stopped you from watching the match, I am sure you would have something to say about it,” they wrote.

“So treat your neighbour with respect.”

The England versus Croatia semi-final kicks off (today) Wednesday, June 11 at 7pm.

We at the Recorder are also supporting England but we also want to remind readers to stay safe and be responsible while cheering them on this evening.

Please send in any of your World Cup pictures - of family and friends kitted out in the England colours and of course, some Gareth Southgate waistcoat selfies - to the Recorder.

You can send your pictures and World Cup stories to April.Roach@archant.co.uk.
