Pregnant woman told to get off 165 bus for having too much change

A pregnant woman was told to get off a bus because she didn’t have the right change, despite wearing a “baby on board” badge and having more than enough money for the journey.

Anna Millington, 25, of Brentwood Road, Romford, is four-and-a-half months pregnant says she was “rudely” ordered to get off a route 165 bus because she offered the driver £3 instead of the required £2.40.

She said: “It was humiliating. He rudely said that, as I didn’t have the change, I couldn’t get on. When I got into the office, I was so upset that I just burst into tears.”

Transport for London (TfL) has apologised and said the refusal will be investigated.

Anna takes the 165 bus every morning to Romford station in South Street, then catches a train to her work at London Bridge, which costs her about £200 every month.

She said: “I spend quite a lot of money on travel every week and to be treated in such a horrible way was degrading and extremely disrespectful.

“I have a lot of back pain and it isn’t always the easiest for me to get to places, so to be told I had to get off for no reason whatsoever is awful.”

When Anna asked why she had to step off the bus, the driver told her that she didn’t have the exact amount and even threatened to turn off the engine altogether unless she left the vehicle.

She said: “I didn’t want to disturb everyone else’s commute, so I thought it would be best for everyone if I waited for another one like he told me to.

“I don’t even feel sorry for myself but for other people who are on crutches and can’t walk as well as I can. If he could do this to me, then he must be doing it to other people as well.”

The head of TFL’s bus operations, Ken Davidson, said: “We are sorry to hear that Miss Millington was not allowed to board a route 165 bus when attempting to pay her fare in cash.

“All our drivers are required to carry a small float and provide a reasonable amount of change to passengers where necessary. We apologise this did not happen on this occasion and will ensure the incident is investigated with the bus operator involved.”
