Romford, Gidea Park, Hornchurch, Harold Hill, Upminster and Rainham all lost power at about 4.20pm, as well some areas of Essex including Brenwtood, Ockendon and the Intu Lakeside shopping centre in Grays.

The London Fire Brigade has tweeted the cause of the major outage was a grass fire in Hacton Lane, Upminster and crews are now at the scene.

UK Power Networks engineers restored the “majority” of power at about 4.45pm, before another brief outage at about 5pm that lasted for five minutes.

People have taken to Twitter saying traffic lights were out, while a gym in Hornchurch was cleared and house alarms were going off.
