A beloved lighting shop which has been open for more than four decades will be closing its doors for good.
Havering Lighting, Billet Lane, Hornchurch, will close for the last time on April 5 as the owner retires.
“It’s certainly the end of an era. 42 years we’ve been here and really loved every minute of it,” said owner Colin Coe.
Colin said that he had been “overwhelmed” by the number of people who had come in to the shop to thank him for helping them over the years.
The family run business was opened after Colin’s father Peter sold his first light in 1972. In 1978 Colin teamed up with Peter, and they expanded by buying the shop next door.
They did the same thing again in 1984, priding themselves on their lighting and gift displays and good customer service.
“We have grown and developed over the years,” said Colin.
“It’s an unusual shop. We would talk to people and give them advice”.
His two children also worked in the shop while they were growing up. His son Andrew is now a wing commander in the RAF and his daughter Judith is a physiotherapist.
“They’ve got their own careers, so there’s noone to hand on to really,” said Colin.
“It’s sad, they’ll be a bit of a hole when we go”.
Colin said that the shop was probably one of the oldest in Hornchurch and that customers had been coming in with their children and even grandchildren over the years.
There will be a goodbye dinner held for the staff who work at the shop.
Colin and his wife Linda are both well known in the area and take an interest in local charities.
Once he has retired, Colin plans to spend more time working with First Step, a Hornchurch charity which supports children up to the age of four who have special educational needs, where he is a trustee.
“Other than that, we’ll be playing a bit more golf and bowles!” he said.
