Archant

Police have stepped in to close down an alleged brothel said to have been operating on a quiet, residential street.

Neighbours of the property, in Masefield Crescent, Harold Hill, have said they are shocked and “disgusted” that such a business could open just a stones throw away from their front doors.

Heaton Safer Neighbourhood Team has visited the address and issued a warning to the person suspected of running the premises.

The team are now in the process of locating the landlord of the building.

A 31-year-old resident who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I moved here three weeks ago and was told by others who lived around here that this was going on but I didn’t want to listen to rumours.

“But now I’ve seen it for myself - men going in and out of that place like there’s a rotating door.

“I’m so disgusted by all of this and wish something would be done to put a stop to it.”

The alleged brothel is said to have disturbed the peaceful nature of the neighbourhood, attracting people who urinate against fences and knock on the doors of neighbours in search of “business”.

A 37-year-old neighbour said: “My 13-year-old daughter opened the door once to one of their punters but I shut the door straight away since I knew what he wanted.

“I don’t feel comfortable in my own home - this just can’t carry on.”

There are fears that this will affect house prices in the area. A 43-year-old woman who lives in Masefield Crescent said.

“A lot of people round here are thinking about moving because of what’s been happening but I don’t think they’ll be able to if the value of our houses go down.”

Police are continuing their enquiries but no arrests have been made so far.
