Police officers broke up a fight between a group of young men in Romford town centre after witnesses reported seeing some of them carrying knives.

A Metropolitan Police Service spokesman confirmed officers were called to Victoria Road at 2.55pm today (Wednesday, April 18) to reports of a large group of men fighting, some of whom passersby claimed to have seen with knives.

Officers attended the scene and broke up the disturbance – there are no reports of anyone being discovered with any serious injuries.

One man has been detained.

An eyewitness told the Recorder he had seen a group of young men begin squaring up to each other outside the Romford Community Probation Services building, before one pulled what appeared to be a carving knife from his pocket.

At this point he left the scene.

Inquiries continue.
