Firefighters were this afternoon battling an inferno in the stairwells at the disused car park in Mercury Gardens.

The fire took hold of the disused car park at about 4.45pm, and crews from Romford and Dagenham fire stations were called out.

It was under control after an hour and a half.

Police were on the scene and shut off the carriageway at its junction with Western Road. It is not known when the roads will reopen to traffic.

The car park is thought to remain structurally safe as it is made of concrete.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire.
