Romford’s Raphael Park is set to undergo improvements after parkrun organisers secured nearly £3,000 worth of funding to install rubber matting around the bandstand at the park.

The organisers of Raphael parkrun, which began in 2015 and now welcomes more than 300 participants every week, applied for the funding through Leeds Building Society’s Community Reward Scheme.

The scheme launched in partnership with parkrun and supports participants of parkrun events with initiatives that make a long-term, positive difference in the community.

Adam Coals, a core volunteer at Raphael parkrun, said: “In the past poor weather has made it difficult to use the bandstand all year round for parkrun events, as well as other activities organised in the bandstand.

“The funding we’ve secured through Leeds Building Society’s Community Reward Scheme will enable us to put down rubber matting to protect the grass around the bandstand for the benefit of all park users.”

The project that will cost around £2,800 will be completed before the end of the year and ensure the bandstand can be used for events all year round.

Nikki Marsh, director of customer and digital at Leeds Building Society, said: “Our Community Reward Scheme aims to support projects that have a longstanding positive effect for local communities.

“Funding the rubber matting project at Raphael Park will not only improve conditions around the bandstand for parkrunners, it will mean the facilities are accessible for all park users no matter what the weather.”

Leeds Building Society and parkrun launched the Community Reward Scheme to celebrate a year of partnership between the two organisations.

The scheme is open to participants of parkrun events nationwide and offers grants and practical support to initiatives that make a long-term, positive difference in their communities.

Applications for the Community Reward Scheme can be made through the Leeds Building Society website.
