A quarter of the Paralympic Flame will make a special appearance in Havering at the weekend, en route to the start of the relay.

Four flames will be lit on peaks in each of the four home countries of the United Kingdom tomorrow (Tuesday).

They will be combined next week in Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire, home of the Paralympic Games, to form the Paralympic Flame - but not before one section pays a visit to the stage at the Havering Show, at 3pm on Sunday (August 26).

Harold Hill resident Nicole Evans, who has cerebral palsy, will collect part of the flame from Trafalgar Square on Friday.

Nicole, 25, took up athletics aged 15, when she decided to complete the Mini London Wheelchair Marathon.

She was the first person in Havering with a physical disability to study GCSE PE, while studying at Gaynes School, in Brackendale Gardens, Upminster.

She was told she would never walk, but this year completed the London Marathon in four days using a walking frame.

This piece of the flame will be taken on stage at the show in Harrow Lodge Park, Hornchurch, by Peter Bruce, Head of Havering Sports Council.

This year’s show, held on Sunday and Monday, promises to be the most accessible yet, Havering Council said.

A disabled viewing platform will be provided at the main stage. It should make the show much more enjoyable for wheelchair users, or those who have other disabilities which mean they are unable to stand for long periods of time. There will also be disabled parking, which is free for Blue Badge holders, and accessible toilets.

To mark the visit of part of the Paralympic Flame residents will be able to try their hand at disabled tennis and other activities.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Michael White, said: “The Havering Show is one of my highlights of the year, but to host a piece of the Paralympic Flame is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.

“Along with Hornchurch Live we’ve got three great days out coming up. What’s more, it’s all free!”
