There are fears parts of Havering could grind to a halt tomorrow morning during the London-wide Tube strike.

Members of the RMT and TSSA unions will walk out at 9.30pm this evening until Thursday night, leaving a skeleton service on the Underground.

The action comes after talks broke down with Transport for London (TfL) over controversial plans to close Tube station ticket offices and axe hundreds of posts.

Every office in Havering would close as part of the plans, which will save TfL more than £40million a year.

Commuters are being warned to expect disruption in tomorrow morning’s rush hour, when the District Line will be running a reduced service.

Trains will be running between Upminster and Wimbledon every eight minutes in both directions but will not stop at Elm Park, Upminster Bridge or Hornchurch.

Upminster will be the only Tube station left open in Havering.

Passengers are being urged to find alternative routes or work from home if possible.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson accused strikers of “holding a gun to [Londoners’] heads” and Mike Brown, managing director of London Underground, urged unions to call off the “completely unnecessary” strike.

But the unions said it was needed to try and save ticket offices and protect 750 jobs, although TfL said it would avoid compulsory redundancies.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow called the plans “a kick in the teeth” for long-serving staff.

The changes are some of the biggest ever attempted on the network.

More ticket machines will be put into entrance halls when 260 ticket offices are shut by 2015, and staff stationed elsewhere in stations.

New visitor information centres will be opened in major central London stations and some will see a boost in staff.

The Central Piccadilly, Victoria and Jubilee lines and part of the Northern line will be open all night on Friday and Saturday from 2015.
