One lane on Upper Rainham Road will remain closed for several days, after a 15-inch cast iron water main burst on Wednesday morning.

One lane is open in both directions with two-way traffic light, after engineers worked overnight to repair 9 metres of pipe.

Engineers were alerted to the incident at 4am, and the water was turned off just an hour later at 5.12am, yesterday morning.

A spokesman from Essex and Suffolk Waters said that repairs to the water main were complete, but that the road would remain closed.

He said: “Engineers worked for 14 hours to repair the pipe overnight.

“Now the road needs to be resurfaced, and residents should expect that the lane will remain closed for quite a few days.

“It is a big job.”

The road was closed in both directions between Elm Park Avenue and Laburnum Avenue, for several hours on Wednesday morning, after a large crack opened in the road.
