Chafford Hundred magazine’s latest One in a Hundred profile features dance teacher Alison Anderson, of Alison Anderson School of Dance

I have lived in Chafford Hundred for more than 19 years and love the area and its sense of community.

I teach ballet, tap, street dance, freestyle, disco, breakdance, fitness and more, at the Alison Anderson School of Dance at Harris Academy, Tudor Court Primary and Warren Primary.

I have been dancing for 35 years and was taught by the Strictly Come Dancing head judge, Len Goodman. I joined his weekly class just for fun, but ended up competing across the UK.

Len was my very first dance teacher and mentor and was my inspiration to dance. Now my pupils inspire me too.

I decided to become a dance teacher because I enjoyed helping younger children in my classes and loved the interaction with them, especially their fun yet honest conversations - they tell you how it is!

One of the best things about my job is seeing the children when they start, sometimes being shy and quiet, and then in a few weeks or months, watching them express themselves in their moves and coming out of their shell.

It’s wonderful to see them grow into beautiful dancers and young adults but it goes too quickly.

I feel very proud when my pupils put on a fantastic performance whether it’s in a school hall, theatre or competition floor.

Dance is great fun, it keeps you fit and you meet lots of friends and if you’re competing, you travel all over the country and even abroad.

Anyone going into a career in dance should be ready for a crazy but fantastic journey.
