Revised plans from the body which draws up electoral constituencies in England mean that there appears to no longer be any chance that Romford landmarks will move to a new ‘Dagenham North’.

New plans released today (Tuesday) re-draw the Romford constituency for general elections – leaving Brooklands and Mawneys wards where they are but incorporating Eastbrook ward from Dagenham and Rainham.

The proposals are unlikely to be implemented however as in August Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg vowed to vote against the moves when they come before Parliament.

The original plans, released last September, would have seen landmarks including Queen’s Hospital and Romford Greyhound Stadium, considered part of ‘Dagenham North’ for the purposes of general elections.

Hylands ward - which was also planned to move into Hornchurch and Upminster - will also remain in the constituency.

Romford MP Andrew Rosindell, who campaigned against the proposals, said this week: “This is an excellent result for Romford and means that our constituency will not be broken up.

“We do not know for certain yet if these changes will be implemented, this will depend on the Liberal Democrats when it comes to a vote in the House of Commons next year.

“However, I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to campaign last year to ensure that Brooklands, Mawneys and Hylands remained as part of Romford.”

He added: “May I also welcome Eastbrook ward, where the Rush Green Hospital used to be located, where I was actually born.”

Under the new plans Hornchurch and Upminster would stay the same, while the Havering wards of South Hornchurch, Elm Park and Rainham and Wennington will remain in the Dagenham and Rainham constituency.
