Procedures including boob jobs and face lifts will no longer be funded by the NHS in the borough, as well as limited access to IVF treatment.

Following a public consultation, the Havering Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which is made up of the borough’s GPs, alongside the CCGs based in Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge, have made a number of decisions regarding treatments available to residents.

It has been agreed that NHS funding in these boroughs will no longer be available for treatments including cough and cold remedies, head lice and scabies medicines, gluten-free products and medicines for dental conditions.

Cosmetic procedures such as labiaplasty, breast enlargement and revising breast enlargement and face and brow lift surgeries will also not be funded by the local NHS.

As well as this, there will be limited access to in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) with funding for one embryo transfer for 23-39-year-olds and weight loss surgery.

The cuts to funding have been made after the CCGs were required to save £55million in 2017/18 and asked residents during an eight week consultation period, for their views - more than 650 responses were received.

The NHS in these areas however, will continue to fund treatments including male and female sterilisation, the surgical removal of moles, scars, cysts and birthmarks, hair removal and breast reduction.

Clinical lead and Havering GP Dr Maurice Sanomi said: “We’ve had to make some tough decisions, but that’s the job we signed up for.

“The savings will help us to protect the most vital services for local people and their families and I hope the public will understand that we simply can’t afford to keep spending their NHS money on some of these things.”

Fellow clinical lead and GP Dr Ashok Deshpande said: “We have been heartened that they largely agree with what we are doing – trying to save the local NHS money at a very difficult time.

“We simply couldn’t carry on without doing something.

“We didn’t recommend everything that we consulted on – we listened to people’s concerns around things like stopping IVF altogether and we decided to reject them.”
