A new international food section is set to appear in the market in the next few weeks, and it is hoped that coach trips to Romford Market will be a common sight once more.

Cllr Robert Benham told the Recorder: “We just signed-off last Thursday to have an international food court at the end of the market. We had the Italian Market on Sunday and that was pretty successful.

“We’ve got to try new things, and the new food will appear in an L-shape at the end of the market near Tollgate House.”

He also said that the car park in Como Street will become specially used by coach groups this summer, with coach drivers offered to take part in a voucher scheme.

“At first it will be on a Saturday and if successful we’ll extend it to Fridays and Wednesdays.

“We advertise in trade magazines, coach magazines. In the summer we get people from Norfolk and Lincolnshire coming to see the historical 766-year-old market.”

The council also plans to extend its Romford Market Apprentice scheme for young traders, to offer all residents the opportunity to try out being a trader for the day.

“We’ve also got Easter and St George’s Day events planned, and they are always very popular.”
