A former Conservative MP who represented Romford for more than 20 years has sadly died.

Sir Michael Neubert passed away on January 3 at Cheltenham Hospital, Gloucestershire, aged 80.

He was first elected as Romford’s MP in 1974 and remained in the position until 1997, when he lost his seat to Labour’s Eileen Gordon.

Havering Council’s deputy leader, Cllr Steven Kelly, paid tribute to Sir Michael, who served as a defence minister under Margaret Thatcher.

He said: “Sir Michael served the people of Romford for 23 years and was well-respected locally as well as within parliament where he was a strong advocate for our area.

“We are very saddened to hear the news of his death and our thoughts are with his family at this time.”

Sir Michael’s funeral is due to take place on January 23.
