More than 400 Havering union members and residents are expected to march through London in protest of the government’s austerity measures this weekend.

The members are expected to include nurses, midwives, care workers, street cleaners, hospital porters and librarians and say they are asking the government to ditch its austerity and cuts agenda.

They will be joining public sector workers and Unison members on the TUC’s march on Saturday, October 20.

Marshajane Thompson, from Unison in Havering, said: “Havering Unison is encouraging members to attend the march to protest against this Conservative-led government’s failed agenda of austerity cuts that are disproportionately impacting on the most vulnerable in society.

“Locally we have seen cuts in public services and job losses all impacting on Havering residents. I hope Havering residents, especially those who are concerned about the future, will join us.”

Linda Perks, regional secretary for Unison in London, said: “Public sector workers can see firsthand what the government’s cuts are doing to the vital local services that people in London rely on. And all of the economic data shows that cuts are only making a bad situation worse.

“Deep spending cuts damage public services, hit the vulnerable and threaten recovery. They’re dangerous, unfair and unnecessary.

“It’s time for the government to listen to experts who are advocating we invest our way out of recession.”

The demonstration will start at 11am from Victoria Embankment, ending with a rally at Hyde Park.
