Two men were arrested, one for drunk driving and the other for obstructing police, after officers stopped them for driving through a red light.

Barking and Dagenham officers were on a routine patrol in High Street, Hornchurch yesterday, when they witnessed a car drive through a red light which they then stopped.

The driver and passenger both “smelt strongly of alcohol”.

While waiting for the arrival of more officers, the passenger became increasingly “irate, abusive and obstructive”.

When the other unit arrived, the driver pushed one of the officers, causing him to stumble backwards and ran off.

The male was chased on foot and detained shortly, nearby but he resisted arrest and in the process injured an officer’s leg.

The driver, a 26-year-old male was arrested for drunk driving, causing injury with the intent to resist arrest and resisting arrest.

The passenger, a 25-year-old man, was arrested for obstructing police and drunk and disorderly.

They remain at an east London police station.
