A 32-year-old man remains hospitalised and in a critical condition after his car crashed into the side of a bus on Tuesday night.
Police were called to the junction of North Street and St. Edwards Way, in Romford, at 10pm.
Ambulance crews also attended the scene and found a man in his 30s in “cardiac arrest” and suffering from “serious injuries” after his car collided with the 86 bus.
A doctor stayed by his side in the ambulance as he was taken to the Royal London Hospital, in Whitechapel, where he remains.
Luke Hudson, a 19-year-old enforcement officer from Essex Road, Romford, saw the crash from the back of the 103 bus.
He said: “I was coming round the roundabout on a bus and the guy was coming round the roundabout too.
“The car has come round the roundabout, I heard the screech of tyres, and he’s gone over the island and into the bus.
“To be honest I think I was quite lucky – if I’d come round the roundabout five seconds later it’d have been my bus.”
The owner of Chinese takeaway Fortune House, in North Street, rushed out of the shop after hearing a “really loud bang”.
“It looked very serious,” he said. A great deal of smoke and flames were coming from the car, he added.
No arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing.
