A 34-year-old man admitted to sleeping in a Territorial Army Centre before stealing clothes from it.
Manjit Singh, of no fixed abode, appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on Friday via a videolink from Pentonville Prison where he admitted stealing from the shop in South Street, Romford.
The judge sentenced him to a 12-week custodial sentence.
Singh, who came to the UK about a year ago, told the court through an interpreter that he has only managed to get a small amount of work for a friend who owns an Upminster pizza shop.
He relies on handouts from nearby Sikh temples in order to eat.
He wishes to go back to India but his defence lawyer said that he “does not have a penny”.
The judge expected Singh to serve one more week in prison after he had already served five weeks on remand and will be paroled after half the sentence.
