A 24-year-old man is calling for more CCTV on residential roads after the “terrifying” experience of being robbed and threatened with a Rambo style knife in Romford.

Police were called at around 3am on Monday, July 23 to reports of a robbery in Spring Gardens.

Ben Jiggins from Valence Avenue, was unlocking his bike outside a block of flats when he heard a car pull up.

He told the Recorder: “As soon as I heard the car I knew straight away that something wasn’t right.

“There were four people in the car. One man said give me money, give me cocaine and so I gave him all the money I had which was about £5 in change.

“He said that’s not enough and he pulled out a great big knife and put it on the console in the car.

“He said if you don’t give me more, I’m going to get out and kill you.”

Ben explained that there were quite a few witnesses and that residents who lived in the nearby estate came outside to see what was going on.

“It was pretty terrifying. It was obvious that the man who was driving was on drugs because his pupils were dilated and he was very aggressive.

“I will never forget his face.”

At one point the man tried to get out of the car but his friends sitting behind him in what Ben described as a silver hard-top convertible BMW 320, managed to hold him back.

“[The knife] was like a Rambo knife, or an army knife and it was huge,” Ben added.

“The middle of the blade had holes in it - it wasn’t like an ordinary kitchen knife.”

Ben’s main concern is that there was no CCTV installed in the area to record the incident.

He said: “The worst thing is it it happened in an area that just isn’t covered.

“Because I was so shaken up, I wasn’t thinking about getting the licensing plate number.

“If the license plate had been caught on camera it would prevent people from getting away with things like this.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed the incident had occurred and said: “Officers from the East Area Command Unit are investigating.

“No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue.”
