The managers of a Romford shopping mall got a taste of life on the shop floor as they swapped their keyboards for pricing guns last week.

The management team of Mercury Mall, Mercury Gardens, Romford, helped retailers on a busy pre-Christmas shopping day.

Centre manager Sarah De Courcy Rolls – who spent a day working in McDonald’s – said: “Most of us have only ever worked in an office environment so it was a real eye opener.

“We now all feel a real empathy for anyone working within the service industry - whether its entertainment or retail. “

Sarah said she was amazed by the cleanliness standards and procedures around preparing a burger.

“I think we all benefitted from our Back to the Floor work placements,” added Sarah.

“One thing that was clear. As the Centre and all retailers move towards the busiest time of year, expectations are high.

“We all found the pressure to achieve and be great was almost overpowering and that standards, stock and customer service levels have to be the very best they can be. One thing we all learnt was that those that think retail is an easy life, should really think again!.”
