A street art project with a difference has launched with the aim of brightening up the town centre with help from the homeless.

Community Interest Company (CIC) Made Public, based at The Retailery, Market Place, Romford, has begun crowdfunding for its latest creative scheme Lost Voices, asking for a total of £55,140 to get it up and running.

The project will get the borough’s homeless charity Hope4Havering involved, to assist in partnering up street artists with individuals living on the streets to create art in the town centre.

Lauren Martin of Made Public said: “Every day in Romford we walk past many homeless people, we may recognise their faces, we may exchange coins and even a “hello’”, but rarely as local residents do we get to hear the stories, opinions and ideas of those living on the streets.

“We want to use street art to give homeless people a voice within the community in which they live.

“We want to challenge the perception of homeless people in our town, demonstrating that homeless people are no different than any other people, that homelessness could happen to any of us.”

Made Public initially launched Colour in Romford last year, installing large-scale murals designed by artists across the town including at The Brewery, Fiction nightclub and The Retailery.

So far 12 murals have been installed in Romford but the team is now hoping to go one step further.

Made Public would like to get homeless people to work alongside artists to develop art that represent the stories, dreams and opinions of each homeless person.

The owners of the buildings will also be part of the project, ensuring they are happy with the art.

Made Public will need to raise the money by September 24 in order for the scheme to go ahead.

Lauren said: “Not only do the art works act as a stage for expression, and an awareness raising tool, but will also brighten up the very streets on which the homeless people live - giving them a connection back to their community and the ability to create change in their own environment.”
