Will London’s Mayor Boris Johnson run as an MP in Hornchurch and Upminster in 2015? The rumour mill is certainly spinning fast enough to suggest it is a possibility.

Two senior Conservative sources alluded to a chance that he may take aim for Parliament and run in the constituency.

The incumbent Hornchurch and Upminster MP, Dame Angela Watkinson, has not yet indicated a desire to run again.

Chairman of the Hornchurch and Upminster Conservative Association Cllr Steven Kelly said: “The whole world is hearing it going round. It’s hardly a secret but it’s pure speculation.

“Boris has to decide what he wants to do.”

He would have to take a safe seat in order to save the embarrassment of such a high-profile politician not winning, Cllr Kelly added.

“And we have got one of the two safest seats in Essex.”

Conservative Romford MP Andrew Rosindell also said he had heard the rumours and wondered if it was the reason Dame Angela had not yet announced her desire for re-election in the area.

But he added that as far as he knows she will stand there again.

Dame Angela was unavailable for comment but a spokesman at her Westminster office said: “I don’t know what Boris’s plans are but as far as I’m aware there’s no vacancy.”

The Mayor’s official spokesman said: “The Mayor is focused on delivering for the whole of London. We don’t comment on speculation and rumour.”

Conservative HQ did not wish to comment.

Boris faced criticism from BBC show Sunday Politics this week as Havering was one of five London boroughs that he did not visit on official business last year. But he visited luxury hotel the Savoy, in the Strand, three times.
