Parliament’s summer recess came to an end on Monday, and Romford MP Andrew Rosindell wasted no time getting his questions in after the six-week break.

Issues such as tuna fishing licences and energy prices in British Overseas Territories feature on the Hansard record of the 11 written statements, which also includes questions on civil liberties and downed Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.

Mr Rosindell said constituents rarely asked him questions about overseas territories like St Helena and Ascension Island.

“They would not ask questions like that but then they do not sit on the Foreign Affairs Committee,” he said.

“If I told them we were subsidising them by hundreds of millions of they probably would care about them.”

He added: “I’m not sure many people would even know what St Helena or Ascension Island is.”

Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Romford, Sam Gould, voiced strong criticism, suggesting the delayed opening of Romford’s first free school - which resulted in 43 children having to find new places elsewhere - was more important.

“In the last month we have seen 40 children in Romford left without a school place after the collapse of Romford’s first free school and the prospect of £60million worth of cuts to our services in Havering,” he said.

“Yet our MP has decided that the price of energy in St Helena is a more pressing matter!”

He added: “It is an insult to the people of Romford (the people he is supposed to be representing) to ignore the problems we have in favour of his donors abroad.”
