One of the borough’s green spaces is now undergoing refurbishment.

Raphael Park in Romford is due to get improved entrance gates, planted areas, railings, benches and walkways.

There will also be improved protection for parkland and wildlife and new refreshment kiosks.

A major change will also be the renovated park lodge, which will have a new café.

Some areas will be closed occasionally in the interests of safety. The work is expected to be complete in the winter.

The refurbishment is taking place following a £1.9m grant from the Hertiage Lottery Fund, council funding and a grant from the Veolia Havering Riverside Trust.

Councillor Andrew Curtin, cabinet member for culture, towns and communities, said: “The restoration of Raphael Park will make an important contribution to the enjoyment we get from the environment in Romford.

“The work will strengthen nature conservation in the park, restore the historic environment of this important historic landscape, and provide important new facilities including public toilets.”
