It’s official: Labour’s Sadiq Khan is the new Mayor of London.

The announcement of the result was delayed until after midnight as minor discrepancies in the votes led to a recount.

Mr Khan is now London’s first Muslim mayor.

The Tooting MP was the pollsters’ favourite to win after his rival fought an election battle some criticised for being “negative”.

Mr Khan addressed this during his speech, saying that the fight had “not been without controversy”, but ”I am so proud that today London has chosen hope over fear and unity over division. I hope that we will not be offered such a stark choice again.”

Mr Khan thanked everyone who had worked on his campaign as well as his family, including his late father, “amazing mum” and “wonderful wife”. Zac Goldsmith gave a brief speech in which he said he wished Mr Khan well. There were cries of “apologise” and “say sorry”.

When the first and second preference votes were combined, the totals for the top two candidates were Khan 1,310,143 and Goldsmith 994,614.
