Councillor Michael White, who announced his decision to stand down as Havering Council leader, released this statement this morning:

“After ten years, I have decided to step down as leader of Havering Council to take up a new position in the private sector.

“It’s been my absolute privilege to lead this council for the last decade and I am immensely proud of what we have been able to achieve in that time. I feel extremely fortunate that I have been able to work with a group of visionary councillors and hugely committed officers. I would like to thank them all.

“Together, we have stabilised tax bills for residents; invested in local priorities - from parks and social care to libraries and schools; protected valued services like weekly bin collections and made sure our borough remains a clean, green and rewarding place to live.

“Somebody new will have the honour of leading the council and the Conservative group into May’s local elections. I will stand in the hope of once again representing the residents of Squirrel’s Heath ward, but as I return to work in the private sector I don’t believe I can continue to devote the time needed to lead the council effectively.
