Reading your Romford Recorder headlines on boards on the pavement could soon become a less common sight.
Havering Council is holding a consultation on whether to introduce new regulations and fees for businesses putting out A boards.
The council has written to businesses asking them to comment on the plan before April 28.
The letter says: “There have been changes to legislation and an increase in the use of the pavement by street cafes and A boards.
“Because of this increase a street trading policy is proposed to control or licence street trading.”
Cllr Geoff Starns, cabinet member for community safety, said: “While we support businesses in Havering, our high streets can be very busy and we need to make sure that the streets are clear enough for people to use.
“It is really important that we get this right and that is why it is important that visitors, residents and traders all take part so that we can get a balanced view of this new policy.”
Cllr June Alexander (Residents Association, Cranham) said: “It’s not going to help local businesses in areas like Cranham, I think it’s an awful idea.”
The draft of the Street Trading Policy is subject to a two month consultation period and can be found at www.havering.gov.uk/streettrading.
