The council is asking for your opinion on whether the centre in Rainham should stay open.

Havering Council is reviewing the future of the Chafford Sports Complex in Rainham.

The council is launching an eight-week consultation from today (Tuesday, October 16) until Monday, December 10.

The Chafford Sports Complex is owned by the Harris Academy Rainham, but run by the council’s leisure contractor SLM Ltd (Everyone Active).

Council funding for this site is due to stop in December 2018, and there is no funding for the complex in the council’s base budget.

The review will consider a number of factors regarding the complex and options for its future.

The consultation is one part of a wider review to help deliver savings as a result of decreasing government funding which has left a £37 million budget gap.

Councillor Viddy Persaud, cabinet member for culture, said: “This consultation will tell us how residents are making use of Chafford and help us to understand the viable leisure options available for people in the south of the borough.

“This council is committed to delivering quality leisure facilities which serve the whole borough, with significant investment in the recently opened Sapphire Ice and Leisure in Romford and the renovation of Hornchurch Sports Centre and Central Park Leisure Centre.

Councillor David Durant, of Rainham and Wennington Ward, and Councillor Jeff Tucker handed in a petition with more than 1,200 signatures in support of the council taking back ownership of the complex at the last full council meeting.

Cllr Durant told the Recorder: “It is a well used centre and is important to those in the south of the borough.

“My point of view is that the council should take back ownership of the centre.

“They have spent millions on a new ice rink and centre in Romford, and they must be able to find the money to spend on Chafford.

“School children and the public both still use the centre, and it is important that we fight to keep it open.”
