One 80-year-old said her new kitchen which is part of an overhaul of council homes was the best she had “ever had in her married life.”

Kitchens and bathrooms were treated to a lick of paint and all new fittings in 19 sheltered accommodation properties in Garrick House in Adelphi Crescent, Hornchurch which is for elderly and vulnerable people.

Irene Everitt said she was thrilled with the ongoing work which is part of Havering Council’s Decent Homes project.

The 80-year-old bingo lover said: “The end product will be lovely but you do have to put up with a bit of dust, but at the end of the day it’s well worth it. It’s the best kitchen I’ve ever had.”

Her block has already received a complete renovation of its exterior with new guttering and piping as well as a new roof.

Conservative Cllr Lesley Kelly, cabinet member for housing, said: It’s crucial that we get all council properties up to scratch and it’s only right that those who live in our sheltered accommodation benefit from new kitchens, heating systems, bathrooms and general improvements.”

Residents also got a say in how the communal areas were redecorated getting a choice on wall colours, carpet patters and fabrics for sofas and chairs.

When summer eventually arrives, they will also be able to make the most of the sunshine after a new patio area was given the go-ahead.

Cllr Lesley Kelly (Harold Wood) said: “I’m delighted that residents are happy with the ongoing Decent Homes improvement work.”
