Councillors have had their wish granted to get a bus to finally stop outside of Rainham Station.

Transport for London (TFL) has said that the 372 bus that passes through the town will now be re-routed to the station and will share the 103 bus stop outside the library.

This is after concerns were raised about how narrow the pavement was at the previous bus stop in Wennington Road, and TFL has agreed to move the bus stop a matter of yards away to the station.

The existing 372 bus stop on the narrow pavement by Rainham Hall Gardens will now be closed and the good news is that there are no changes to the westbound service.

TFL carried out a consultation in October last year, and now the results have shown that 74 per cent of the 120 responses it received were in favour of the bus stopping outside the station.

Of the responses received 119 were from members of the public and one was from a stakeholder, 74 pc of the responses supported the proposed changes, six pc neither supported nor opposed them, 16 pc opposed or strongly opposed them, two pc were not sure and two pc did not answer.

The changes are set to go ahead from Saturday, June 2.

Councillors had also previously campaigned back in November to get the potentially dangerous historical wall at the bus stop in Wennington Road rebuilt.

Rainham ward councillors had previously been concerned that the wall in Wennington Road - which as part of Rainham Hall belongs to the National Trust - was in danger of collapsing as a result of people leaning against it while waiting at a nearby bus stop.

Explaining the new changes to the bus route a spokesman from TFL said: “Route 372 will be rerouted at Rainham Station, eastbound only. From Broadway, it will run via Old Station Lane, Celtic Farm Road and Ferry Lane, returning to the line of route on Wennington Road.

“Bus stop B on Wennington Road will no longer be served.

“Instead, route 372 will serve bus stop N on Celtic Farm Road. There are no changes to the westbound service.”

Councillor David Durant, of Rainham and Wennington ward told the Recorder: “It’s good news for everyone.

“We’ve been campaigning for this for a while and we’ve finally been given the green light from TFL.

“Local councillors have been campaigning for this welcome change for a long time, and it follows a big time saving re-route in Hornchurch town centre that made the small time losing re-route in Rainham possible.”
