Angry Romford MP Andrew Rosindell slams David Cameron and draft EU deal

The eurosceptic Tory has called this morning’s draft deal a massive disappointment.

A letter from Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, outlined the plans, which include an “emergency brake” on benefits for migrant workers and a “red card” system giving individual Parliaments the ability to block EU legislation.

The Prime Minister said the agreement represents substantial change but admitted there is more work to be done.

But staunch Royalist Mr Rosindell, and other critics, have slammed the draft.

“He’s wrong,” he told the Recorder. “I can barely even understand what the agreement is, I’m a bit lost for words. It’s been a complete and utter flop from the beginning.

“I expected David Cameron as Prime Minister of a Tory majority government to be bold and demand fundamental changes in our relationship with the EU and he has failed to do that.

“It’s just a few crumbs off the table. He should have demanded a completely new relationship about trade and co-operation not political union.

“This idea of a red card if we don’t like the laws as long as we get 14 other countries to agree with us... we know they aren’t going to agree with us, we don’t win any votes. We don’t decide anything anymore.

“I’m quite angry, he’s letting British people down.

“I hope he will tell the people the truth. This is not a fundamental change – it is against our interests to be tied into a political block which prevents us from deciding what is in our own national interests.

“We are the 5th largest economy in the world. We have got all the cards and he hasn’t played them.”

The MP also accused David Cameron of changing his stance since the start of discussions about an EU referendum.

“His words today don’t match his words at the start of this process about powers being restored to Britain,” said Mr Rosindell. “None of it has been achieved. I don’t understand how he can begin to present this as a success.

“I never believed it would be a success but I did think he would at least ask for fundamental change and he didn’t.

“I think there will be huge demoralisation cross-party on this. David Cameron seems to have given in.”

Mr Rosindell also praised Havering Council for voting in favour of the EU “Out” vote last week.

The authority was the first in Britain to do so.

“I’m very proud of the council and councillors for showing backbone. They stood up and made a collective statement. Our entire future depends on this.

“We should be proud and I hope others will follow. Councils are massively affected by EU laws. All the money that goes out of the country could be spent on local services.”
