The Liberty shopping centre has won a leading industry award for its campaign to combat negativity towards Romford.

The centre was singled out from more than 100 others across the UK at the Savills Awards - where it picked up the Yellow Apple Marketing Award for its The Story of Havering campaign.

The year-long project was launched to highlight the flourishing young talent and array of places to visit and enjoy within the area, in response to the negativity it receives.

Success was achieved through inspiring young people of the community to get involved in creative activities such as story writing, art and storytelling.

It also engaged with younger and older generations across the borough, encouraging them to tell the story from their perspective.

The Liberty’s manager, Jonathan Poole said: “I’m really proud that we’ve won this award, especially as we were up against 113 other shopping centres.

“Winning shows our continued dedication to our community and commitment to encouraging positive perceptions of our town. We have a fantastic collection of talent in Havering and we will continue to create projects that will benefit and unite our younger and older generations.”

The centre was also awarded second place in the CSR Intiative category for its Enterprise In Education campaign, a successful project with more than 50 people from diverse backgrounds overcoming barriers preventing them from reaching their career goals.
