A Brentwood speech and drama teacher was amazed to discover she’d won first prize in St Francis Hospice’s weekly lottery.

¨I’ve never won anything before,” said 77-year-old Jean Morris, who netted the £1,000 prize earlier this month.

Jean first looked round the Havering-atte-Bower hospice when she was visiting a friend. “I remember meeting some of the wonderful staff and pushing Vivienne in her wheelchair round the beautiful and peaceful gardens,” she said. “It was a lovely atmosphere.”

Jean, who is semi-retired but remains active in local amateur dramatics, says she will put the money towards a cruise next year.

The lottery celebrates its first birthday with a special anniversary draw on Friday October 19. There will be two first prizes of £1,000 on offer, as well as the regular rolling second prize and 10 third prizes of £10.
