ESSEX Police is being investigated by a watchdog after a teenage driver arrested in Hornchurch ended up critically ill in hospital.
The 18-year-old was caught at around 3pm on September 13 in the Southend Arterial Road at its junction with Ardleigh Green Road.
It followed a police pursuit, which started in Essex.
He was taken to Chelmsford Police Station where, 12 hours later, he complained of severe abdominal pain and was rushed to hospital.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating these circumstances.
The boy is currently in intensive care, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
The man’s sister made a complaint to the IPCC on September 21 and, following an assessment of the information, a probe was launched on September 23.
Investigators are analysing footage of the incident, working to trace independent witnesses to the arrest, and will be examining officers’ initial statements.
Anyone who witnessed the arrest is asked to contact the IPCC on: 020 7166 3000.
The IPCC is not releasing the identity of the driver or where he lives.
