A 58-year-old man was “tarred and feathered” while he lay intoxicated on a bench outside Tesco in Roneo Corner, Romford.

Police were called to the store on Sunday at around 6pm after passersby found a man lying on the bench covered in a sticky black substance and feathers.

The London Ambulance Service took the victim to an east London hospital for treatment.

He has now been released after receiving specialist treatment.

John Hercock, 66, of Chestnut Avenue, Hornchurch, saw the mess left behind after the attack and inquired in the store as to what happened.

He said: “Staff in the shop told me that someone had been tarred and feathered.”

Det Sgt Robert Baxter said: “This is a horrible crime - if anyone has any information in relation to this incident - or who may have seen something suspicious at this time on Sunday can they please contact us.”

Havering CID can be contacted on 101 or any information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
