People visiting Hornchurch on Saturday had a cracking time at the Christmas lights switch on.

More than 300 children had their picture taken with Father Christmas before going around the town centre collecting pieces to make a cracker to take home.

The Christmas Cracker event was launched by Mayor of Havering Cllr Lynden Thorpe at the Queen’s Theatre.

Carol singers, street entertainers and circus acts entertained the crowds while children went on the free rides.

The Christmas tree lights were switched on at 5pm by The Queen’s Theatre’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk characters, at the Hornchurch Centre Roundabout, signalling the start of the Christmas season in Hornchurch.

Cllr Robert Benham, cabinet member for community empowerment, said: “I can’t believe how many people came along to the event, despite the weather. It was a fantastic turnout and everyone who came along enjoyed themselves. Even the retailers braved the weather to come out on to the street to celebrate.

“The idea behind the event was great and it was good to see all the kids joining in and having fun. I don’t know how we will top it next year!”

The Christmas Cracker event was organised by the Hornchurch retailers group and was supported by Havering Council.
