A Hornchurch High Street convenience store is to close in November after two years of failing to turn a profit.
Waitrose has announced that it will be shutting and that its 41 members of staff will be offered the opportunity to stay with the company – which is part of the John Lewis Partnership.
The shop opened in November 2010 and will continue to trade until November 1 this year.
Diana Hunter, the company’s director of convenience, said: “The decision to close our Hornchurch branch was not one we took lightly, and was made after long and careful consideration.
“We made a major investment with every expectation that the shop would be successful and we understand the disappointment this decision will cause to our customers.”
The retailer says it will seek a new tenant for the premises, considering the wider needs of the community, and will maintain the site’s security until it is sold.
Cllr Michael White, leader of Havering Council, said: “This is disappointing, but Waitrose remain committed to Upminster and I will be seeking an urgent meeting with them to discuss other opportunities in the borough.”
