A 15-year-old singer won 1,500 after wowing judges in a talent contest.

Luke Burr, of The Woodfines in Hornchurch, impressed with his version of Luther Vandross’s Dance With My Father at the Essex’s Got Talent final at the Civic Hall in Grays, Essex on Sunday (October 3).

Luke, a pupil at Campion School in Wingletye La, Hornchurch, trounced hundreds of other hopefuls in three Essex-wide heats to get to the final.

He said: “It was amazing I didn’t think I would win at all to be honest. All my mates came so to win it in front of them was amazing. “They were singing and cheering along all the way through, it softens the nerves.”

Luke, a soul fan who has just started writing his own soft rock tunes, said he chose the track because his friend’s father had passed away last year.

He also likes James Morrison, Danny Callum, R Kelly and John Legend.

Luke’s Mum, Diane, said she did not know where Luke’s talent came from

“I’ve got no rhythm at all, I’m more of a football supporter,” she said. “But Luke asked for singing lessons two years ago and has been learning the piano for one year.

“It was just lovely to see him win. It’s something he really wants to do, to come first is amazing.”

Luke said he wanted to spend his cash on a grand piano but first he is concentrating on winning more talent contests - Sky’s That Must Be The Music and Romford’s Brewery Star.
