Two friends are holding a charity fun day after they both lost relatives to long term illnesses.

George Clark, 21, of Plumpton Avenue, Hornchurch, and Michael Bones, 22, of Brights Avenue, Rainham, are hoping to raise at least £700 for Cancer Research and dementia charity, Tapestry, with their bank holiday event at Hornchurch Cricket Club on Sunday, August 30.

“My mum has fought cancer five times,” said George. “And she has won all five battles.

“It has been hard, but she is my role model and my rock and I am so proud of my mum for overcoming Hodgkins disease four times and breast cancer once.”

George also lost both grandfathers to cancer and his grandmother died at Christmas from stomach and bowel cancer.

Michael’s grandmother, Eileen, was diagnosed with dementia six years ago and eventually died after developing pneumonia in January.

“The charity, Tapestry, is important to me for its focus in raising money for research,” explained Michael.

“My grandmother suffered from this uncomfortable and distressing disease and was unable to care for herself for the last four years of her life.

“If it wasn’t for the network of support from the carers and dementia services we were provided, my family would have found it much more difficult to cope, and without their support my nan would not have been able to carry on fighting throughout her struggle.”

The fun day has been a labour of love for the friends who have organised everything from scratch with the support of their families.

It will kick off at noon at the cricket club in Harrow Lodge Park, Hornchurch Road, and will have various stalls, face painting, bouncy castles, go-karting, a barbecue and much more.

Bubbles the Bear, West Ham’s lovable mascot, will also make an appearance for children – and the odd grown up – to have their picture taken with him.

“It’s an open event and we hope to see as many people as possible on the day,” said Michael.

“We are also open to more ideas and if anyone would like to run a stall, help or donate then visit justgiving.com/Hornchurchcharityday”
