Staff and students at a secondary school were evacuated this afternoon after a fire broke out in a classroom.

The fire broke out in a third floor classroom at Abbs Cross Academy and Arts College, in Abbs Cross Lane, Hornchurch, and all 850 students and staff had to be evacuated before the London Fire Brigade arrived.

Fortunately the fire was relatively minor with only 5per cent of classroom reportedly damaged and there were no injuries.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said they were called at 1:52pm and had the incident was over by 2.55pm with only one engine required to deal with the blaze.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
