It was all hands on deck for one Hornchurch sailor who has been helping flood-hit communities.

Able Seaman Michael Barnes broke off from training at HMS Colingwood in Fareham, Hampshire to fill sandbags for residents in the south battling to protect their properties.

The 25-year-old, whose parents Perry and Kate still live in the area, has helped fill thousands of sandbags for properties in Berkshire and helped build a wall of them around the University of Southampton’s art school in Winchester.

Mr Barnes, a former pupil at The Albany School in Broadstone Road, Hornchurch, said: “It’s great to be able to help out in a crisis, it’s why I joined the Navy.”
