A vegetable and plant display survived the Sunday’s shine and Monday’s downpour to raise nearly £3,000 for St Francis Hospice.

Volunteers from the Hornchurch and District Gardening Society were at the Havering Show, in Harrow Lodge Park, Hornchurch, selling their fresh produce.

In the packed out Sunday the gardeners raised £1,900 for the Havering-atte-Bower charity and despite heavy rain and a low turnout on Sunday they still raised £900.

Treasurer Robert Rand: “If the weather had been fine, who knows what we would’ve made?”

Romford MP Andrew Rosindell and Havering Mayor Cllr Linda Trew popped into the society’s tent to view the gardeners’ hard work.

So far the society has raised nearly £17,000 for the hospice since 2001. In the first year they raised only £164 but Mr Rand said this has increased to more than £2,000 last year.
