Hornchurch Country Park turns back the clock on Saturday, June 2 when it hosts a Military History Day.

Organised by the Essex Wildlife Trust, there will be a main display by the RAF Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Society that will include pilot uniforms, artefacts and photographs.

There will also be a 1940s band, local vendors and children’s crafts.

The event is being held from 10am to 4pm at Ingrebourne Valley Visitor Centre.

Hornchurch Country Park is a historic site that began as Sutton’s Farm airfield. It helped protect London during the First World War and was in active use until 1962.

For £5, visitors can also book a guided walk of airfield shelters with a park ranger, which will take place between 11am and 1pm.

Terry Roberts, of the Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Society, said he hopes this event will help people understand the military history of Hornchurch.

“It’s to keep the memory alive and educate further generations for years to come.”
