The Hornchurch & Upminster Sea Cadet Unit held its bi-annual Royal Naval Parade this week.

The youngsters were able to meet a special guest at their base in Wood Lane, Elm Park –

Commander Tim Porter RN, area officer, who is in charge of all London units.

They had been preparing for his inspection for more than a month, and he was shown around the unit by the officer in charge, S/Lt Sarah Butcher.

“It went really, really well,” she said. “Some of the cadets were nervous as they have never done a parade before but once they got into it their nerves settled down.”

He was shown displays highlighting seamanship, adventure training, catering and marine stances.

The cadets then took the opportunity to put on a display for everyone, showing off some of the skills they have learnt such as first aid and leadership they have used in competitions during the last year.

They also highlighted some of the fun elements they took part in such as ships visits, attending the Invictus Games, Remembrance Sunday and other community events.
