McFarlane: We’re doing well

Hornchurch manager Jimmy McFarlane does not want to get carried away.

Urchins kept their Ryman Premier Division promotion bid on track with a 2-0 win at Kingstonian last weekend, thanks to a superb brace from top scorer Martin Tuohy.

They remain five points adrift of leaders Billericay ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Concord, before one of their games in hand against Hastings at Bridge Avenue on Tuesday.

McFarlane said: “I’m never one to go shouting about things. We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing.

“I was very pleased with Saturday. It was a professional performance.

“I’m trying to stay level-headed, but it’s hard at the moment. We’re doing so well.”

Hornchurch have taken 16 points out of a possible 21 since the turn of the year to maintain their hold on second place.

And following the recent additions of Leon McKenzie and Fola Orilonishe, their squad has never looked so strong.

Lewis Smith is due to complete his suspension this weekend, but Joe Anderson should return from a slight knock.

McFarlane added: “I watched the Kingstonian manager’s interview and he said exactly what I thought.

“He said we looked streets ahead of them and that it looked like men against boys at times.

“It’s hard to single any one out. All of the back four were excellent, especially Michael Spencer who played at left-back and has probably played every position this year apart from in goal!

“We’ve got competition in all areas. It’s very healthy at the moment.

“I’ve said to the players they will be disappointed if they’re left out, but if it’s any consolation they’re being out of a good side.

“They’ve all been superb and the subs are playing in the Capital League to keep their fitness up.

“We’ve just got to keep doing our best and having a go.”
