Kind-hearted and green-fingered allotmenteers presented St Francis Hospice with a record 2,250 after a fundraising drive at this year’s Havering Show.

The cash came from the Hornchurch and District Allotment Society marquee at the Hornchurch festival in August, where members displayed and sold their produce. The sum is the largest amount raised by the society in any one year and brings its donations to the hospice to 14,260 since 2001.

Havering’s Deputy Mayor Eric Munday and his wife Peggy were principle guests at the town hall presentation ceremony on Friday October 5. Lynda Head of St Francis was present to receive the donation from the society chairman Maurice Sparkes.

“The show gives the society the opportunity to recognise the valued help it receives from the council at large and display to the public what can be grown within the Havering borders,” said the society’s Bob Rand.

The Hornchurch and District Allotment Society represents 15 of Havering’s 26 allotment sites and lets new plots regularly. For details, visit http://www.havering.gov.uk/Pages/Services/Planning-allotments.aspx.
