An exhibition commemorating the victims of Nazi persecution launched in Brentwood yesterday.
The Town Hall attraction comes ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day, which will take place on Monday.
Residents will be able to find out more about the life of Dutch Christian Corrie Ten Boom, who, along with her family, helped many Jewish people escape.
She was imprisoned for her actions.
The exhibition will include a model of the hiding place where people were concealed at her home.
There will also be talks from John Fieldsend, one of the 1,000 Kindertransport children who were rescued from Nazi Germany 75 years ago.
Cllr Madeline Henwood, Brentwood’s mayor, said: “We are honoured that John Fieldsend will be sharing his experiences.
“This is an important event and shows the need to take every opportunity given to end discrimination.
“I hope others take the chance to pay their respects to those who have suffered unfair persecution over the years.”
Organiser Moira Dare-Edwards said: “This is a chance to commemorate those lives that were lost in the Holocaust.
“It is important for people to learn lessons from it. It is also a good opportunity to educate children and to honour people’s differences.”
The exhibition will be open until 4.30pm today and between 10am and 1pm tomorrow.
It will then move to Brentwood County High School, of Seven Arches Road, from 5pm tomorrow.
Brentwood’s service for Holocaust Memorial Day will also take place tomorrow, at 6.30pm in the school.
Actress Susan Stein will appear in a performance as Etty Hillesum, a victim whose letters and diaries were published after her death.
She died in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The performance will be followed by a discussion.
