A parade of voluntary groups, led by the Haverettes marching band, processed to St Nicholas Church and then back to the legion club, on Maylands Avenue, where an auction and raffles were held – raising a total of £1,048.

“We had an excellent parade,” said legion member Stephanie Nunn, “the best for 30 years according to our president, George Desmond.

“There must have been 150 children, guides, scouts, cubs and brownies, as well as the Haverettes band.”

Former mayor Cllr Pam Light joined in with the service at St Nicholas, while the church’s Rev. Amanda Keighley joined the march back to the legion.
